The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has clarified that it has not conducted its South-South Zonal Congress and is not involved in the ongoing gathering taking place in Calabar, Cross River State.
This information was conveyed in a statement issued on Saturday, signed by the National Publicity Secretary of the Party, Hon. Debo Ologunagba. He emphasized that the PDP has not held its South-South Zonal Congress and has not yet announced a new date for this event.
“For the avoidance of doubt, the National Working Committee (NWC) met on Thursday, February 20, 2025, and, exercising its powers under Section 29 (2)(b), under Sections 31 (2)(c) and (j) of the PDP Constitution (as amended in 2017), postponed the South-South Zonal Congress originally scheduled for Saturday, February 22, 2025. This decision was made to allow for further consultation on critical issues related to the smooth conduct of the Congress in the region.
“To clarify, Section 29 (2)(b) of the PDP Constitution empowers the NWC to act on behalf of the National Executive Committee (NEC) in cases of emergency, subject to ratification by the NEC. Additionally, Section 31(2)(c) mandates the NEC to supervise and direct the party’s activities at all levels, including National, Zonal, State, and Local Government organs. Furthermore, Section 31(2)(j) enables the NEC to establish electoral regulations governing the conduct of elections for party offices and the selection of candidates for elective positions.”

It further urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), security agencies, and the media to disregard any gathering or purported results from the assembly in Calabar that claims to be the South-South Zonal Congress of the PDP.
The party assures all members and stakeholders that a new date for the conduct of the South-South Zonal Congress will be communicated in due course.
