Two young men have been arraigned and remanded in correctional custody for the alleged murder of a University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) student during a bonfire night event organised by the Faculty of Arts.

The Enugu State Police Command confirmed that the suspects, Ezema Onyedikachi, 27, and Ugwu Chigozie Anthony, 21, were charged with conspiracy and murder over the death of Nweze Chiebonam, a 29-year-old male, who was fatally stabbed in the early hours of September 13, 2025.

According to the police, the incident followed a minor vehicular accident involving the suspects and the deceased after the event, which had taken place on the evening of September 12 at the Department of Archaeology and Heritage Studies.

Although the initial altercation was reportedly resolved, investigations revealed that the suspects left the scene, later returned armed with a dagger, and launched a premeditated attack. Ezema Onyedikachi was said to have fatally stabbed Chiebonam in the chest with the weapon, which was subsequently recovered by the authorities. The victim was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, described the killing as “unfortunate and avoidable,” urging young people to reject violence and seek peaceful means of resolving conflicts.

The case has sparked widespread concern on campus and in the wider community, prompting renewed calls for improved student safety and conflict resolution education.

The suspects remain in custody as the legal process continues.
