Abia Police Commissioner Assures Justice for Late Mr Akobundu, Says Officers Involved Are Under Arrest
The Commissioner of Police in Abia State, CP Danladi Isa, has assured residents of Bende Local Government Area that justice will be served following the death of Mr Okorie Wisdom Akobundu, whose demise sparked unrest among local youths.
Addressing the aggrieved youths on Sunday following the unrest that enveloped Bende on Saturday, the Commissioner stated emphatically that all police officers involved in the arrest of the late Mr Akobundu have been placed under arrest and are currently under investigation.
“I have never shielded any police officer who committed an offence. We have dismissed some, we have charged some to court, and some are currently in prison,” he said. “I assure you on my honour that justice will be served in this matter.”
The Police Commissioner appealed for calm, urging the community to allow the law to take its course as investigations continue.
Tensions had escalated in Bende after reports emerged that the deceased had died while in police custody following his arrest.
In their defence, the police stated that the individual suddenly collapsed and was taken to a hospital in Umuahia, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
