Fire Razes INEC Office Days to Rerun Election

There was a fire incident at the Ibadan South East Local Government Area, Oyo State office of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Friday.

In a statement made available by the state Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Dr. Adeniran Tella stated that there was no casualty in the fire which started around 10:30 am.

The REC who argued that there correlation between the event and the rerun election of the Saki West State Constituency which was held on the 3rd of February, 2024 revealed that the cause of the fire is yet unknown.

According to NAN, the REC guessed that the fire might have been caused by a power surge and luckily affected only logistics materials.

The Tribunal had ordered a rerun election in Saki West State Constituency after INEC declared Mr Shittu Ibrahim of the All Peoples Congress (APC) as the winner of the election.

The candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Mr Julius Okedoyin approached the court citing overvoting and noncompliance with electoral rule, a case which the three-man panel led by Justice Jubril Anaja found worthy.

“INEC is hereby ordered to conduct a re-run election in Ward 6, Unit 7, and Ward 11, unit 19 within 90 days,’’ Anaja declared.
