Couple Calls Off Wedding Over Disagreement on Which Church to Attend

A wedding that was set to take place on April 5th, 2025, in Jos, Plateau State, between Yakubu Azi Abok and Patience John Addra, was abruptly called off just before the ceremony.

The cancellation came as a result of a deep disagreement between the bride and groom regarding church attendance after marriage. Despite the venue being ready and guests arriving, the couple could not overcome their differences on this pivotal issue.

The conflict began during the final marriage counseling session with the reverend, when the topic of their future church life together was raised. The bride, a devout Catholic, expressed that she would continue to attend her own church. In contrast, the groom, a loyal member of COCIN, insisted that they attend his church together once married.

When the Reverend inquired whether this issue had been discussed during their courtship, the couple exchanged uneasy glances. The groom then revealed that his mother had strongly insisted they attend his church as a couple. In fact, he said his mother made it clear that if the bride refused, their wedding would be called off.

A source familiar with the situation shared that the bride was upset and responded, “If your mother is going to decide everything for you, then maybe we should call off the wedding.”

The groom, surprised by her reaction, returned home to discuss the matter with his mother, who agreed that the wedding should be cancelled.

As the big day neared, Patience, the bride, tried to reconcile, promising to attend the groom’s church in an effort to salvage the relationship. However, her future mother-in-law had already made up her mind, and the situation seemed irreparable.

On the day of the wedding, guests arrived to find the venue empty, and the aisle that was meant to host a joyous ceremony remained vacant. With heavy hearts, the crowd realized the wedding had been called off, leaving the bride devastated.
