The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has shut down eight rice shops and a warehouse in the Karu Local Government Area of Nasarawa State.

Following a raid on Friday, it was discovered that these facilities were involved in producing and distributing counterfeit rice, leading to the seizure of over 1,600 bags valued at approximately ₦5 billion.
The operation extended to Wuse and Garki markets in Abuja, in response to a directive from NAFDAC Director-General Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, aimed at safeguarding public health during the festive season.

During the raid, officials uncovered counterfeit rice that had been repackaged in branded bags, including names like Big Bull, Royal Stallion, and Tomato Aposo, all designed to deceive unsuspecting consumers. Additionally, empty rice bags bearing popular brand names were found at the Karu facility.
Mr. Kenneth Azikiwe, the Director in charge of the FCT, warned counterfeiters to cease these practices or face legal consequences. He also stated that those apprehended during the raid would be prosecuted to deter others from similar activities.
