The Nigerian Police has stated that the agency will make concerted efforts to combat vote buying and ensure that the use of money will not influence the 2023 general elections.
This was made known by the Inspected General of Police, Usman Baba represented by AIG Operations, Alhaji Bala Chiroma at the ongoing Stakeholders Summit on addressing the influence of money on the 2023 General Election NAF Centre Abuja on Monday.
“As a lead agency in electoral security management, we will initiate a synergy with sister agencies, anti-graph and intelligence agencies, and other stakeholders to encourage no vote buying. We will also ensure that the police squad, intelligence officers, and investigators are moved to the field to ensure that politicians, who move on election day with tons of money or physical cash for vote buying are apprehended and dealt with within the confines of the law.”
Speaking further, the Director General of the National Broadcasting Corporation, NBC, Balarabe Shehu Ilelah stated the media is often manipulated during elections and called for financial regulations.
“The power of media is usually manipulated at a time like this. However, the financial regulations will ensure that media access is equitable and relevant to all political parties.
I also want to make it very clear to you again, you must not allow your platform to be used to cause problems in this country.”
