On Sunday I just woke up, joined my husband to go visit my in laws. Actually my mother in law had called earlier, instructing us not to cook at home that she had prepared beans which is my favourite. When we got there, as usual I rushed to the kitchen and ate very well. Enjoyed every bit of the meal but I did something different this time. I finished washing the dishes and decided to give her kitchen a face lift. I spent hours deep cleaning her kitchen and she walked in on me! I could see the joy and excitement in her voice as she ran to call Her husband.
Apparently, she is getting old and weak but she is still working like that and she is always giving to us. She would graciously give her time, money, resources etc. There is nothing this woman doesn’t give and I got tired of receiving so I decided to give back to her. The only thing I know that she needs which is assistance. When I saw how happy she was that I cleaned her kitchen for her, yesterday I just carried my daughter and her daughter to her house and started cleaning the whole house. Took my time to deep clean room by room.
And I did it all with love because I finally realized what it means to take them as my own parents. I can’t keep being on the receiving end all the time, it felt so good to see the repeated gratitude and joy 0n their faces. For the first time, my father in law started addressing me by my native them. Before he calls me, ‘Blessing’ but he changed it and people! I have a full bag of garri in my house, plantain, semo etc. She even sent soup and was looking for more things she could send for me. She even happily drove to my son’s school to pick him up.
She entered the kitchen, prepared pounded yam and ‘banger’ soup with joy for us. We just came home to sleep. And I made sure I cleaned my own house before leaving so when we got back, my husband stepped his foot inside our house and told me ‘God bless you ‘ my house is shining. I didn’t just go clean another person’s house, I started with my house and still helped out a lovely old couple to put smiles on their faces! I guess this is how God feels when we seek what He wants without looking for what is in it for us first. He would give us much more!
