Police Arrest Couple Who Mercilessly Flogged Little Girl Over Mangoes

A 33-year-old man, Mr Muhammad Shetima, and his 23-year-old wife, Mrs Aishatu Abubakar, have been arrested by the Borno State Police Command for flogging an 11-year-old school girl who entered their compound to pluck mangoes.

In the viral video, Hauwa Mohammed Goni, a Primary 5 pupil of Bolori Primary School, Federal Low Cost, entered the residence of the couple in Pompomari on the 19th of March 2025. She was accosted by the couple who flogged her mercilessly and also recorded her and shared it on social media.

On seeing the video, operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Borno State, arrested the couple and commenced an investigation.

“Concerned citizens and civil society organizations, including a petition filed by Potential Attorneys, swiftly raised the alarm, leading to the couple’s arrest. They were apprehended with the assistance of concerned citizens and operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Borno State Command.”

According to ASP Nahum Kenneth Daso, the Public Relations Officer of the Command, the victim has since been taken to the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH) for medical attention and she is responding to treatment.

“The suspects are currently at the Gender Unit, State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) Maiduguri as investigations are ongoing before prosecution.

“The Command assures the public that the case will be thoroughly investigated, and the suspects will be prosecuted under relevant sections of the Child Protection Law and the Borno State Penal Code Law.”

Recall that on Friday, a 12-year-old boy, known only as Paul, died after being shot by his landlord for entering the landlord’s compound to retrieve a football on Monday while the school children were playing a game of football at the Urban Secondary School field in Area N of the World Bank Housing Estate, Owerri, Imo State.
