The Senegalese government has informed its citizens that mobile internet connectivity will be suspended for certain hours beginning on Monday, 31st July 2023.
This was made known in a statement by the communication ministry shared on Monday by Me Moussa Bicar Thiam said the suspension was to prevent subversive and hate speech.
Speaking further, the statement revealed that this is to prevent a threat to public order and a lasting solution to the disorder of public peace.
There have been deadly clashes between police and supporters of opposition leader Ousmane Sonko who came third in the 2019 presidential election and is considered popular with the support of the teeming youths.
He is President Macky Sall’s main competition and has urged Sall to publicly declare that he won’t seek a third term in office.
Though his supporters believe that his legal troubles are part of a government effort to derail his candidacy in the 2024 presidential election.
Due to this, the government suspended access to Whatsapp, Facebook, and Twitter which it said were used to incite violence.
