INEC Announces Date for Edo, Ondo Gubernatorial Elections

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, announced dates for the off-season governorship election in Edo and Ondo State.

The National Chairman and Commissioner for Information and Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun on Monday disclosed that thw Edo gubernatorial election will be held on September 21, 2024, while Ondo’s gubernatorial election will be held on the 16th of November 2024.

The Commission issued the Timetable and Schedule of Activities for the Edo and Ondo State Governorship elections as follows:

EDO STATE
The Governorship election will be held on Saturday 21st September 2024.

Party primaries will be held from 1st – 24th February 2024 while the submission of the list of nominated candidates via the online portal will start at 9.00 am on 4th March 2024 and close at 6.00 pm on 24th March 2024.

The final list of candidates will be published on 23rd April 2024 while the campaign in public by political parties commences on 24th April 2024 and ends 24 hours before election day on 19th September 2024.

ONDO STATE
The Governorship election will hold on Saturday 16th November 2024.

Party primaries will be held from 6th – 27th April 2024 while the submission of the list of nominated candidates via the online portal will start at 9.00 am on 29th April 2024 and close at 6.00 pm on 20th May 2024.

The final list of candidates will be published on 18th June 2024 while the campaign in public by political parties commences on 19th June 2024 and ends 24 hours before election day on 14th November 2024.

DETAILED TIMETABLE
The detailed Timetable and Schedule of Activities for the two elections have been uploaded to the Commission’s website and social media platforms.

By this ample notice as required by both the Constitution and the Electoral Act, the Commission appeals to political parties and candidates to note the activities in the Timetable for strict compliance.

Meanwhile, the Commission has announced a mock accreditation for the forthcoming off-cycle Governorship elections in Bayelsa, Imo, and Kogi States scheduled for Saturday 11th November 2023.

It revealed that the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) will be used and upload of polling unit results to the INEC Result Viewing Portal (IReV) and will take place simultaneously in the three States on Saturday 14th October 2023 from 8.30 am to 2.30 pm.

“A maximum of three polling units in each Senatorial District have been identified across each of the three States, covering a total of nine Senatorial District and 27 polling units. Lessons learned from the exercise will be taken into consideration in ensuring a seamless process on Election Day.”

The Commission appealed to registered voters in the selected polling units to turn up with their Permanent Voters’ Cards (PVCs) for the exercise.
