Peter Obi, the 2023 Presidential candidate of the Labour Party, has stressed that Nigeria can achieve inclusive and sustainable growth by adopting structured, data-driven policies targeting rural development, industrialization, and diversification.
Speaking on his recent trip to Indonesia on February 3rd and 4th, 2025, Obi emphasized that through political will and strategic execution, Nigeria can unlock its full potential and ensure no region is left behind. He highlighted the importance of a structured approach to governance, ranging from extremely underdeveloped areas to self-sufficient villages, with key leadership from municipal and traditional heads.
During his trip, Obi mentioned that he held insightful meetings with influential Indonesian leaders. His first session was with Agung Laksono, former Minister and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, who provided valuable insights into Indonesia’s governance strategies and the planning and execution that drove its transformation.

He revealed that his second meeting with Muhammad Jusuf Kalla, former Vice President of Indonesia, shared lessons on how Indonesia’s progress was made possible through focused commitment and decisive leadership, ensuring development across all sectors.
He also stated that his meeting with Yandri Susanto, Indonesia’s Minister of Villages and Development of Disadvantaged Regions discussed the remarkable strides made in rural development, with a focus on education, healthcare, and support for micro and small businesses within villages under President Joko Widodo’s administration.
Obi, who had been an advocate for good governance and people-oriented policies, stated that the trip to Indonesia underscores his commitment to learning from successful governance models to drive sustainable development in Nigeria.
