NAFDAC Busts ₦114 Million Alcohol Operation, Uncovers Fake Hennessy, Jack Daniels, Remy Martins, Others

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has uncovered a large-scale operation specializing in the adulteration and distribution of expired alcoholic beverages in Lagos, with counterfeit versions of several popular brands seized during the raid.

Officers from NAFDAC’s Investigation and Enforcement Directorate apprehended 38-year-old Mr. Madu Abuchi Simon while he was in the act of falsifying premium liquor brands, including Hennessy, Baileys, Martell, William Lawson, Jack Daniels, Jameson, Remy Martin, and St. Remy. The suspect attempted to escape but was promptly captured.

A thorough search of the premises revealed expired Amarula cream liquor, hundreds of empty branded bottles and cartons, counterfeit labels, cotton wool, stoves, and a purple chemical suspected to be used for bottle cleaning and reuse.

Over 100 cartons of adulterated drinks estimated to be worth more than ₦114 million were confiscated and the illicit outlet has since been sealed by the agency.

NAFDAC is urging consumers to remain vigilant and only purchase alcoholic beverages from reputable and licensed outlets. The agency reaffirmed its commitment to protecting public health and warned that it will continue to crack down on illegal activities endangering consumer safety.
