The Lagos State Wastewater Management Office (LSWMO) has sealed the Orchid Shopping Centre along Orchid Road Eti-Osa for discharging untreated wastewater into the road and public drains.
According to a release signed by the office of the General Manager, Engr. Adefemi Afolabi, the Agency shut down the Centre in line with its mandates to monitor and ensure buildings have sustainable and environmentally friendly wastewater treatment systems in place.
According to LSWMO, it gathered that through its monitoring and compliance team, the Orchid Shopping Centre was discharging untreated wastewater into the road and public drains thereby creating environmental nuisance and endangering public health.
While reiterating that the State has zero tolerance for environmental pollution and degradation that portends negative effects on the public health of its citizens, it advised all residents, estates and organisations discharging untreated wastewater and sewage into the environment to desist or face sanctions according to the law.
It noted that necessary sanctions will be served on the property, the owners and occupiers in line with the provisions of the Lagos State Environmental Management and Protection Law, 2017.
