Weighing in on the narrative by Cynthia Morgan about her record label handled by Jude Okoye, Davido’s brother and Chairman of HKN music Adewale Adeleke have stated that most artist bring about their own downfall.
He stated that people are quick to blame labels and managers when an artist fails but also quick to forget the managers when the artist makes it.
He also stated that these artists signed a contract which they are bound to honour even though that most are given horrible contracts.
Read his statement below;
Fans be so quick to blame labels or managers for ruining artist careers but when the artist make it, its by their own doing…..doesn’t add up!!!!
Think about it when artist are successful nobody credits the label, or Managers for money or time spent pushing the artist it’s the artist, But let an artist be relevant & go down its the label. The label is greedy the label took all my royalties they left me for dead. I’m not saying some labels can take artist for a ride and give out horrible contracts. Everyone should remember these artist signed contracts willingly, but some times its the artist themselves that bring their own downfall, no one else!
Recall that Cynthia Morgan set the internet on fire today with her narrative on how her record label seized her name and rights.
Biola Kazeem has this to say…
All it takes for a label to become evil in the eyes of people is for an artiste to want out or to fall into distress. It is almost as if people truly believe people will invest time & serious money just to ensure an artiste fail. Sit down & reason through it for a second. Try. If artistes blow up & want out of their contract, label is evil.
If artistes fail to blow after label blows millions on content and promotion, label is evil.
If artiste leaves label & unfortunately falls into distress, label is evil.
If only it was as simple as this. Try and think through artiste vs label disputes without resorting to the childish template of label being evil and artiste being a victim. Leave that type of thinking for your siblings who are 17 years old or less. Engage your thinking beyond automatic villain/victim framing. The less labels & people willing to invest in artistes we have, the less the chances of young, talented artistes getting a shot at stardom. It’s an extremely tough business & chances of success are incredibly low. Remember that in your rush to automatically label them villains.
