In a surprising diplomatic development, former U.S. President Donald Trump announced that India and Pakistan have agreed to a full and immediate ceasefire following extensive overnight negotiations mediated by the United States.
“After a long night of talks mediated by the United States, I am pleased to announce that India and Pakistan have agreed to a full and immediate ceasefire,” Trump said in a statement. “Congratulations to both countries in using common sense and great intelligence.”
The announcement marks a significant step toward de-escalating tensions between the two nuclear-armed neighbours, which have a long history of conflict, particularly over the disputed region of Kashmir.

No further details were provided regarding the terms of the ceasefire or the scope of U.S. involvement, but the move has been widely welcomed by international observers.
India and Pakistan are on the verge of a broader conflict after India conducted strikes on both Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir. India stated it targeted “terrorist infrastructure” following a tourist massacre in India-controlled Kashmir last month.
According to CNN, Pakistan’s military reported that 31 people were killed in attacks launched by India. Meanwhile, a senior Indian defence source stated that shelling from Pakistan resulted in at least 12 deaths on the Indian side of the de facto border that separates Kashmir.
