Police Arrest 20 Illegal Revenue Collectors

Following the ban on roadside revenue collection, the Anambra State Police Command have arrested 20 illegal revenue collectors who were under the false pretence of being revenue collectors in tbs State.

This was made possible with the help of Joint Police Patrol Teams in conjunction with other agency led by the Area Commander Onitsha, ACP John Ogbuagbaka who arrested the 9th and 10th of December, 2020 while on patrol along Head bridge, upper weak, Owerri road, Niger street and Borromeo roundabout in Onitsha.

The government banned roadside revenue collection in the State after a revenue collector chased a man to his death in Onitsha.

The government also directed all law enforcement agencies to enforce to curb the harassment and extortion on the road.

According to the Police Public Relations Officer, Haruna Mohammed, he stated that all ‘the Suspects voluntarily confessed to the offence and claimed they were hired by various persons to either collect or enforce the collections of revenue on behalf of the government.

This operation complied by Anambra State Government directives on the 7th December 2020 “banning all forms of illegal revenue collections by persons claiming to be State revenue agents or officials. Suspects would be brought to book as soon as investigations are concluded.

Consequently, the Command warns that anybody found engaging in such acts should be ready to face the full wrath of the law. The Command will continue to pursue the hoodlums until they refrain from criminal activities or relocate from the State.’
