The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has commenced the construction of internal roads and drainage system in the Imo State University (IMSU), Owerri.
Speaking during the flagging off of the project, leader of NDDC team, Engr Tony Okanne said the commission has taken up the asphalt of about 1.58 kilometres of roads and 2.5 kilometres of the drainage system.
He attributed attraction of the contract to efforts of Vice-Chancellor of the university who he said made several requests to their office. While promising to ensure that the contracting firm does a high-quality job, he disclosed the readiness of the commission to do more for the university.
In his own remarks the Managing Director, Wisley Engineering Company Ltd, the contracting firm handling the project expressed his desire to have the project completed within the tenure of the vice-chancellor and to execute a project that will stand the taste of time and be enjoyed by generations of students.
“We will actualize this project in a very short time and put the roads in use”.
Responding, the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Adaobi Obasi expressed overwhelming joy at the goodwill of the commission to the institution. She noted that their intervention was timely as most of the roads in the university had become so bad, while erosion was threatening some facilities in the school.
She noted that NDDC had done projects for the institution in the past, such as donation of 500kva transformer, the NDDC hostel, road from faculty of law to the hostel. She said at the completion of the project, the university will ask for more.
Also speaking, the Director of Works, Imo state University Engr VC Igiri assured the NDDC and the contracting firm of all technical assistance they might require for speedy completion of the project.
The highpoint of the event was the cutting of tape by the vice-chancellor to flag off the projects.
