Abia Teachers Suspend Planned Strike After Promising Talks with Government

Teachers across public primary and secondary schools in Abia State have called off their planned strike action scheduled to begin tomorrow, following a productive dialogue with government officials.

In a joint statement released by the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT), Abia State Chapter, and signed by its Chairman, Friday Madu, and Secretary, Nnenna Okonkwo, the union confirmed the suspension of the industrial action.

The decision came after what the union described as “extensive and exhaustive” discussions with government representatives aimed at addressing their grievances.

The NUT leadership acknowledged the state government’s appeal for more time to meet the union’s demands and expressed optimism that the move would lead to constructive engagement and long-term solutions.

“While our concerns remain valid, we are hopeful that this window will be used effectively to pursue genuine dialogue and arrive at outcomes that benefit both our members and the state’s education system,” the statement read.

The union, however, hinted that it will continue to monitor the situation closely and will not hesitate to take further action should the government fail to honor its commitments within the agreed timeframe.
