Starmer Unveils Tougher Immigration Rules, Emphasises English Proficiency and British Investment

Labour Party leader and Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced a significant overhaul of the UK’s immigration system, vowing to restore “common sense and control” to the country’s borders.

Speaking at the launch of a new immigration white paper, Starmer laid out plans to raise English language requirements across all major immigration routes, linking visa access directly to investment in domestic skills.

“If you want to live in the UK, you should speak English. That’s common sense,” Starmer said, asserting that the government will finally honour the Brexit-era promise to “take back control” of immigration.

The proposed reforms aim to create a “controlled, selective, and fair” migration system that prioritises the UK’s national interest. Under the new framework, businesses seeking to hire from abroad must demonstrate active investment in training British workers.

Starmer framed the move as a clean break from previous policies that, he argued, failed to balance the need for skilled migration with the development of local talent.

“This is not about reining in freedom,” he said. “It is the basic and reasonable responsibility of government to make choices in the interest of the nation.”

The white paper outlines a strategy for reducing net migration while enhancing the overall skill level of the UK workforce. Starmer emphasized that the new system will support British workers, raise standards, and ensure that immigration contributes meaningfully to national prosperity.

The reforms mark a pivotal shift in the UK’s immigration approach and are expected to spark debate across political and business sectors.
