Reps Revisit Bill Seeking to Remove Immunity from Vice President, Governors, Others

On Thursday, March 27, the House of Representatives revisited a bill that sought to remove the immunity from prosecution for the vice president, governors, and deputy governors, reversing its previous stance.

This decision came after a motion was introduced by Majority Leader, Julius Ihonvbere, during the plenary session.

The bill, which had successfully passed its second reading on Wednesday, was brought back for further deliberation the following day. Additionally, lawmakers revisited a proposal to amend the Constitution with regard to the death penalty for specific offences.

Deputy Speaker, Benjamin Kalu, who chaired the session, explained that the bills had initially passed their second reading in order to allow for more in-depth discussions.

Kalu emphasized that the sensitive nature of the matters required additional debate, and the bills would be reintroduced for further examination by members.
