Legendary Nigerian Folklorist Chief Mike Ejeagha Dies at 95, Marking the End of a Musical Era

Revered cultural icon, Chief Mike Ejeagha, has passed away at 95 after a brief illness.

Known fondly as the “Gwo Gwo Ngwo” crooner, Ejeagha was a folklorist, songwriter, and highlife musician whose music shaped generations and preserved the Igbo oral tradition.

Born in Imezi Owa in Ezeagu Local Government Area of Enugu State, Chief Ejeagha was deeply rooted in his cultural heritage.

He grew up in Coal Camp, Enugu, in a family led by his civil servant father. His early life and experiences in the region profoundly influenced his musical storytelling, which often carried proverbs, morals, and rich cultural wisdom.

Before fully dedicating himself to music, Ejeagha worked with the Ministry of Health in Enugu.

However, it was his passion for folklore and traditional music that earned him national and international acclaim. Over the decades, his songs became a staple in Igbo households, known for their soothing melodies and profound messages.
