Obi Calls for Urgent Reform of Police Pension Scheme Amid Protests by Retirees

2023 Labour Party presidential candidate and former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi, has expressed deep concern over the continued protests by retired members of the Nigeria Police Force, describing their plight under the current pension scheme as “deeply regrettable.”

In a statement released on Thursday, Obi lamented the conditions faced by former police officers who, despite dedicating their lives to national security, now struggle with poor post-retirement benefits.

He stressed that the neglect of these retirees is both unjust and demoralising, particularly at a time when Nigeria is facing increasing security challenges.

“These are men and women who dedicated their lives to protecting our nation, often at great personal risk,” Obi said. “It is both demoralising and unjust for those who once served on the frontlines to be abandoned in retirement.”

Obi emphasised that the way a country treats its retired security personnel reflects its commitment to the welfare of those still serving. He called on the federal government to implement a “comprehensive and dignified” pension scheme that properly honours the years of service and sacrifice of retired officers.

He added that ensuring the well-being of retired police officers is not just a moral duty, but a strategic move to bolster the morale and dedication of current personnel.

“No nation achieves lasting peace and order without first respecting and caring for its protectors,” Obi stated.

“We must show compassion and care for those who once protected our nation, so that we do not risk losing the trust and commitment of those still in uniform.”

Retired police officers across the country have been staging protests in recent weeks calling for Pension reform and better welfare for Policemen and retired police officers.
