Having Obi as a Candidate Will Guarantee PDP the Presidency – Senate Minority Leader Moro

Senate Minority Leader, Senator Abba Moro, has stated that former Anambra State governor and 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, stands a strong chance of clinching the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential ticket if he returns to the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Programme Politics Today with Seun Okin on Tuesday, Moro revealed that while the party has yet to formally engage Obi in discussions, there are already ongoing behind-the-scenes efforts by certain stakeholders to woo him back into the PDP fold.

“Nothing is certain in politics. I’ve always said 2+2 is not 4 in politics, it is a matter of interest,” Moro said. “When it comes to existential interest for a people within a political zone, it is possible. Having Peter Obi as a candidate will guarantee the PDP the Presidency.”

Reflecting on the events leading up to the 2023 elections, the Benue South lawmaker acknowledged the sentiments that led to Obi’s departure from the PDP, noting that many Nigerians, especially in the South East, believed it was their region’s turn to produce the party’s presidential flagbearer.

“Prior to the 2023 general election, people thought that the party ticket would go to the South, and in fairness, to the South East,” he said. “People thought that since the South East had not produced a candidate in that capacity, it should be them. And obviously, it was Peter Obi that ordinarily would have picked the ticket. So, in anger and frustration, Obi left the party.”

Although Obi has not commented on this matter, there is considerable speculation regarding his political manoeuvres following the 2023 elections. He has joined the Coalition Movement under the African Democratic Congress (ADC) but has not officially left the Labour Party.
