Residents of the Omikunle area of Yemetu, Ibadan, Oyo State, discovered a liquid substance suspected to be Automotive Gas Oil (AGO), commonly known as diesel, inside a community well.

According to a statement from the Oyo State Police Command, the incident was reported around 6:50 PM on Friday, September 6. Acting swiftly on a tip-off, officers from the Yemetu Police Division, led by the Divisional Police Officer, rushed to the scene to investigate the unusual find.

Upon arrival, police confirmed the presence of a substance believed to be diesel floating in the well. Eyewitnesses said that several local residents had gathered with containers, apparently intending to collect the fuel-like substance before authorities intervened.

To prevent any danger or tampering with the scene, the area was immediately cordoned off by armed police personnel, supported by neighbourhood watch members. The Oyo State Ministry of Environment has also been called in to assess and manage the safe removal of the liquid.

Preliminary findings suggest the diesel may have leaked from an underground storage tank nearby, though investigations are still ongoing to determine the exact source and extent of the contamination.

Police described the current situation in the area as calm, emphasising that public safety remains a top priority.

The Oyo State Police Command urged residents to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activities. Authorities also warned against attempting to collect or use the liquid due to potential health and safety risks.
