ASUU Engages Senate Over Strike, Demands Better University Funding

Published

on

As the two-week warning strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) enters its fifth day, the union has opened dialogue with the Nigerian Senate, pressing its demands for improved funding of public universities.

ASUU insists that enhanced financial support is essential for advancing scholarly research, upgrading infrastructure, and addressing what it describes as the lowest staff remuneration across Africa.

The ongoing industrial action, which began on Monday, October 13, stems from multiple grievances. Chief among them is the alleged move by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory to appropriate a portion of land belonging to the University of Abuja.

Another flashpoint is the Federal Ministry of Education’s recent decision to allocate part of the ₦50 billion earmarked for universities to polytechnics and colleges of education — a move ASUU claims undermines university funding.

Despite these concerns, the union acknowledged President Bola Tinubu’s approval of ₦150 billion for universities and welcomed his directive placing a seven-year moratorium on the establishment of new public tertiary institutions in Nigeria. ASUU said these were positive steps but insufficient to address long-standing systemic issues.

As discussions continue, members of the Senate are appealing to both ASUU and the relevant government ministries to seek common ground and avoid prolonged disruption to academic activities across the nation.
