Sowore, Ejimakor, 12 Others Released From Kuje Prison After Meeting Bail Conditions
Human rights activist and presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, along with Nnamdi Kanu’s lawyer, Barrister Aloy Ejimakor, and 12 others, have been released from Kuje Correctional Centre after meeting their bail conditions.
Their release follows a week-long detention after they were arrested during and after a peaceful protest demanding the release of the detained Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader, Nnamdi Kanu.
Addressing journalists shortly after regaining his freedom, Sowore described the arrest and detention as “illegal and unjust,” blaming the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, for what he called a politically motivated clampdown.
“Finally, we have been released from an illegal and unjust arrest by the administration of Bola Ahmed Tinubu, orchestrated by the illegal IGP Kayode Egbetokun, and we are heading home,” Sowore said.
He further issued a stern warning to the police, stating that the security agencies in Nigeria have consistently failed in their constitutional duties.
“This is not the first time the people who are paid to protect lives have turned around to do the opposite. Nobody can warn me of my right, I know my right,” he declared.
Sowore was arrested last week at the Federal High Court in Abuja, where he had gone to show solidarity with Nnamdi Kanu, who is standing trial for treason. His arrest followed that of Barrister Aloy Ejimakor and Prince Emmanuel Kanu, who were picked up during the #FreeMaziNnamdiKanu protest earlier in the week.
