Achike Udenwa Says Call for Creation of Sixth South-East State Fair

Former Imo State Governor Achike Udenwa has stated that calls for the creation of a sixth state in Nigeria’s South-East region are justified, describing this move as long overdue for achieving equity and fair representation.

In an interview on Arise TV, Udenwa expressed concern that the South-East has been disadvantaged in political representation and resource allocation due to its current structure of five states, especially when compared to other regions.

“The South-East has lost a lot in terms of benefits that should have been allocated to us,” he said. “We would have gained three additional senatorial seats, along with a fairer share of revenue and amenities. It would be advantageous if the current National Assembly could create the sixth state that we have been advocating for.”

Udenwa voiced optimism that the present National Assembly would have the courage to address this imbalance, pointing out that while every other region has six states, the North-West has seven.

The demand for an additional state in the South-East has consistently been raised by leaders and stakeholders in the region, who argue that it is essential for national fairness, inclusivity, and balanced development.
