Army Names Shariff Umar as Mastermind of Suicide Bombing Network
The Nigerian Army’s Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK) has announced a major breakthrough in its counter-terrorism campaign, identifying Shariff Umar, also known as Yusuf, as the alleged coordinator of a suicide bombing network operating in the North East.
According to a statement issued on Saturday by the Media Information Officer of OPHK, Lieutenant Colonel Sani Uba, the identification followed intelligence-driven cordon-and-search operations carried out in the Kalmari area of Maiduguri on 31 December 2025. During the operation, 14 suspects linked to suicide bombing activities were arrested.
Subsequent investigations, the military said, helped uncover the structure and operational links of the terror cell. A suspected suicide bomber currently in custody, Ibrahim Muhammad, reportedly identified Shariff Umar as the ringleader responsible for recruiting, preparing, and directing suicide bombers, as well as coordinating logistics and the supply of improvised explosive device (IED) components.
OPHK further alleged that Shariff Umar coordinated the suicide bombing attack at the Gamboru Market Mosque on 24 December 2025, in which an accomplice identified as Adamu died during the attack. He was also linked to a foiled suicide bombing attempt in Damaturu, where he allegedly handed over IED components to a bomber in Maiduguri.
Investigators also established additional links within the network, including the alleged involvement of Shariff Umar’s wife, Yagana Modu. His stepdaughter, Amina, reportedly confirmed having previously seen the suspected bomber within their residence, a development the military said strengthened the investigative trail and exposed methods used by terror facilitators to conceal their activities within communities.
The military confirmed that all suspects remain in custody and are undergoing further investigations aimed at dismantling the entire network, identifying additional collaborators, and recovering any remaining explosives or logistical assets.
OPHK emphasised that the operation highlights the importance of cooperation between security forces and local communities, noting that terror groups often rely on silence, fear, or misplaced loyalty to survive.
The military urged members of the public to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious persons or activities to security agencies, stressing that sustained collaboration is vital to ending terrorism and restoring lasting peace in the region.
