Datti Baba-Ahmed Dumps Labour Party for PRP, Calls It “New Destination”
Datti Baba-Ahmed, the 2023 vice-presidential candidate of the Labour Party, has announced he will officially leave the party at midnight to join the People’s Redemption Party (PRP).

“I am leaving the Labour Party [at] midnight, and I am joining PRP. PRP is the new destination. PRP is the one with a history. It’s about 75 years old,” he stated.
Baba-Ahmed made the declaration on Tuesday during an appearance on Channels Television’s political programme Politics Today, describing the PRP as “the new destination” for his political journey.
“I am leaving the Labour Party tomorrow [wednesday]. There is more to it. When there was real peace in the Labour Party, they pushed back. They redeployed someone with a specific purpose, and because of the individual’s antecedents, they made life difficult, particularly for me. What the Labour Party stood for then is no longer what it is today,” he said.
The former vice-presidential candidate, who ran alongside Peter Obi in the 2023 general election, did not elaborate extensively on the reasons for his departure but suggested that his move was guided by a desire to pursue a platform he believes better reflects his vision for governance.
The PRP, founded in 1978 by the late Aminu Kano, is one of Nigeria’s oldest political movements, known for its progressive ideology.
