Otunba Babatunde Olushola Senbanjo (BOS) Calls for Investigation Into Alleged Seizure of Tricycles Over APC Rally
“Democracy Must Never Become an Instrument of Intimidation Against the People!”
Otunba Dr Babatunde Olushola Senbanjo (BOS) has condemned the reported allegation that commercial tricycle operators in Enugu State had their tricycles seized over their alleged refusal to participate in an APC political rally.
BOS said that if the allegation is established, it would represent a development that requires urgent investigation and accountability.
According to him, in a democratic society, no citizen should be compelled to participate in a political rally against their will. Political support, he stressed, should be voluntary and not imposed through intimidation or threats to citizens’ livelihoods.
He noted that commercial tricycle operators depend on their businesses to feed their families, pay their bills and cope with the economic challenges facing ordinary Nigerians, adding that their livelihoods should not be used as instruments of political mobilisation.
BOS maintained that government exists to serve the people, protect their rights and create opportunities for prosperity, rather than compel political loyalty.
He therefore called on the Enugu State Government to provide a clear explanation of the circumstances surrounding the reported incident.
“If any tricycles were unlawfully seized, they should be returned to their rightful owners, with appropriate remedies pursued in accordance with the law,” he stated.
BOS further stressed that democracy guarantees citizens the freedom to support any political party of their choice or remain politically neutral, adding that no one should be punished simply for declining to attend a partisan gathering.
He also called on political leaders across Nigeria to avoid practices that could undermine public confidence in democratic governance. According to him, leaders should seek public support through policies, transparency, accountability and measurable achievements, rather than through coercion or the misuse of public authority.
“The people are not political slaves, and their livelihoods must never be held hostage to partisan interests,” BOS said.
He urged the relevant authorities to investigate the allegation fairly, establish the facts and ensure that the rights of any affected citizens are protected.
BOS reaffirmed his commitment to democratic freedom, respect for human rights, responsible leadership and the rule of law.
He added that Nigeria belongs to all citizens, regardless of political affiliation, stressing that the strength of democracy lies in the ability of citizens to disagree peacefully, make independent choices and hold those in authority accountable.
“Our position is clear: no to political intimidation, no to the misuse of public authority, and yes to democracy, justice and good governance.”
