Borno State Governor, Babagana Umara Zulum, has condemned the explosion that struck a mosque in the Gamboru Market area of Maiduguri on Monday evening, describing the incident as “utterly condemnable, barbaric, and inhumane.”

The blast, suspected to be a suicide attack, reportedly occurred during Maghrib prayers, causing panic among worshippers and residents in the busy market district.

In a statement released by his administration, the governor decried the attack as a desecration of a sacred place of worship, particularly at a time when Muslim faithful are engaged in acts of devotion.

“Attacking a place of worship is a desecration of its sanctity at a time when Muslim faithful are performing acts of worship,” Zulum said.

He extended his condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in the incident and offered prayers for the quick recovery of the injured.

The governor also called on residents of Borno State to remain calm while urging heightened vigilance in mosques, churches, markets, and other public gathering places to help prevent further attacks.

Zulum assured the public that security agencies have commenced investigations to identify and apprehend those responsible for the explosion.

He added that security measures have been intensified across the state to safeguard lives and property.
