The Northern Elders Forum has reacted to the killing and insecurity in Northern Nigeria and stated the President Muhammadu Buhari has failed the national insecurity, poverty and others.
In a statement on Sunday, Ango Abdullahi, convener of the forum, said the situation was getting worse by the day.
He stated that the constant attacks by bandits and Boko Haram insurgents show that the Buhari administration had failed woefully in terms of security and welfare of citizens.
The spokesperson to NEF, Hakeem Baba-Ahmed said, “The leadership of President Muhammadu Buhari has failed the nation in the vital area of improving security, poverty particularly in the North and massive social security problem has worsened under this administration.
“Northern Elders Forum has refrained from comments on major developments relating to the management of national security and governance because it is convinced that these are times requiring highest levels of responsibility and circumspection in the manner which elders in the nation contribute in the search for a solution to the multiple problems which faced the nation.
“It has now become necessary and appropriate, however, to make public the position of the forum on important matters that affect the manner Nigerians live and the future we must all address.
“On National security, the relationship between insecurity and poverty is fundamental but the administration appears to not have any idea on what will provide relief or solution.
“It gives the forum no pleasure to say that it had warned Nigerians that President Buhari lacks the will, competence and the commitment to lead it into a secure and purposed future before the 2019 elections.
Abdullahi also said the north had never experienced this level of insecurity.
He criticised the President issuing threats and promises that have no effect stating that NEF was consulting other groups and organisations which share its goals to come up with demands from the government over the “unremitting assault” on the lives and livelihood of northerners.
He added, “The Forum reminds President Muhammadu Buhari that provision of security and pursuit of the economic welfare of citizens are the only two constitutional responsibilities of the state which all leaders must achieve.
“Our current circumstances in the North demonstrate that President Buhari’s administration has woefully failed to achieve either. This is unacceptable.
“We demand an immediate and comprehensive improvement of our security in the North. We are tired of excuses and verbal threats which criminals laugh at, and our fellow citizens see as a clear failure of leadership which they see as part of them. Enough is enough.”
