Building Collapse: Developer Was Denied Approval – Okezie Reveals

The Executive Secretary of Abia South Town plan authority, Mr Ahuruonye Okezie has stated that an excavation process has started to rescue people trapped in the collapsed building in Azikiwe, Aba, Abia State.

Newsleverage reported that a three-storey building collapsed in Aba early Wednesday morning.

Mr Okezie also disclosed that the developer was not given a go-ahead to develop the building.

“They were not given a go-ahead order which is what the typical Aba man does. Their file is in the office, the last communication we had was on the 20th of May, 2020 when we asked them to scale down their building. Since then, they have not submitted any withdrawing until this morning. This is quite unfortunate and a problem we have with Aba residents.

“They do not listen to government directives. You need to see how we battle with them in doing the right thing.”

He revealed that his office will seal the building after rescuing the people trapped and look for the owner and Engineer of the building as they have been on the run since the incident happened.

“You do not build when you have not received approval. The law said the field should not be cleared until approval is given. This building was mostly done during the lockdown. We stayed for a whole month in April at home. Just after the relaxing, we resumed office activities on Monday, Wednesday and Friday and the typical Aba developer will do this on Saturday and Sunday when he thinks nobody will be in the office.”

As at the time of this report, four persons have been confirmed dead with many injured.
