The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission has debunked the news making rounds on social media about increasing electricity tariff.

In a statement released to the media on Tuesday, it stated that no approval has been granted for a 50% tariff increase in the Tariff Order for electricity distribution companies which took effect on January 1, 2021.

The statement reveals that the tariff for customers on service bands D and E, which means customers being served less than 12 hours electricity per day over a period of time, remains frozen and subsidized in line with the policy of the Federal Government.
The statement also advised the media to retract the statement of the purported 50% tariff plan and assured Nigerians of its plans to protect electricity consumers and deliver on committed service.
Recall that news of 50% of electricity tariff flooded the media space on Tuesday morning making Nigerians take to social media to register their displeasure over the hike.
