Catechist Caught with Lifeless Body of Girl He Allegedly Impregnated

The Catechist of St. Martin’s Catholic Parish in Mbape Adikpo Deanery in Kwande Local Government Area of Benue State identified as Oliver Vershima was apprehended with the lifeless body of a young girl while trying to smuggle the deceased out of the village on the 4th of June 2023.

Reports say the suspect impregnated the deceased victim who lost her life early Sunday morning while trying to terminate the pregnancy.

The Catechist reportedly hid the deceased’s body in his room while awaiting nightfall and the community when he was caught with the lifeless body. He immediately fled the community.

Fortunately, he was arrested by authorities who handed him over to the Parish Priest, Rev. Fr. Samuel Kante who interrogated him before handing him over to the authorities.

Local authorities have sworn to uncover all facts surrounding the incident which led to the death of the deceased whose identity is yet unknown but hails from Morev.

Meanwhile, the community and the Catholic Church in Mbape are reeling from the shocking revelation, as parishioners and residents struggle to comprehend the heinous act committed by a trusted catechist.

Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer for the State Command, SP, Catherine Anene said that the corpse of the lady had been recovered and deposited at the hospital morgue.

“Corpse of the said young girl who was said to have visited her man friend was recovered and taken to the mortuary after a report was received but the said Oliver is yet to be seen as he brought the corpse out of his room and ran away” Anene said.
