The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has warned that organized foreign fraud syndicates are establishing cells in Nigerian cities, recruiting young Nigerians into serious cybercrimes, including cryptocurrency fraud. EFCC Chairman, Ola Olukoyede, disclosed this while receiving participants of the Executive Intelligence Management Course at the Commission’s headquarters.

Olukoyede expressed concerns that these foreign syndicates are using cryptocurrency to facilitate illegal activities, including the importation of arms into the country. He cited a recent operation in Lagos, where 194 foreigners were arrested in a single building on Victoria Island.
The arrested individuals, comprising Chinese, Filipinos, Eastern Europeans, and Tunisians, were found to be engaging in financial activities using cryptocurrency, with some lacking valid visas.

Furthermore, Olukoyede revealed that some of the arrested foreigners were ex-convicts in their home countries, who had escaped and found refuge in Africa. The EFCC’s investigation suggests that these syndicates are also developing cells in other African countries.
This development highlights the growing threat of cybercrime and cryptocurrency-related fraud in Nigeria, and the need for increased vigilance and cooperation between law enforcement agencies to combat these crimes.
