Utomi Condemns Clampdown on Free Speech, Urges National Resistance to Constitutional Erosion

Prominent political economist and public affairs analyst, Professor Pat Utomi, has spoken out strongly against what he describes as a growing climate of repression and constitutional subversion in Nigeria.

In a strongly worded statement on Friday, Utomi decried efforts to stifle freedom of expression and target dissent, labeling such acts as “cowardice and treachery to the constitution of Nigeria.” He called on patriots across the six geopolitical zones to rise and resist what he termed a descent into authoritarianism.

“I am heartened by messages of solidarity from across Nigeria on this shadowy business of chasing shadows of shadow cabinets,” Utomi stated, referencing alleged attempts to intimidate him through security agencies. “It reminds me of the Nigeria I used to know.”

Utomi expressed gratitude to supporters, noting that some legal minds are mobilizing a team of 500 lawyers to defend him against potential actions by the Department of State Services (DSS).

He criticized the pursuit of power and wealth at the expense of Nigeria’s democratic future, describing such priorities as morally bankrupt and harmful to the nation’s youth and long-term peace.

Utomi also condemned the apparent disregard for constitutional mandates, pointing out that elected officials who defect from their political parties are constitutionally required to vacate their seats. He urged the DSS to channel its energy toward upholding such constitutional provisions.

“Amazingly, we are chasing shadows while our constitution is unravelling, aided by those in power,” he said.
