Abia Commissioner Survives Assassination Attempt

Abia State Commissioner and long-time political ally of Governor Alex Otti, Chaka Chukwumerije, narrowly escaped an apparent assassination attempt two nights ago while traveling from Okigwe to Umuahia.

According to his brother on Monday, Nigerian poet and writer Dike Chukwumerije, the vehicle in which Chaka was traveling came under heavy gunfire, but all occupants survived the attack unscathed, despite the car being riddled with bullets.

In a heartfelt public statement titled “Eyes Forward”, Dike recounted the terrifying incident and offered both a personal reflection on his brother’s dedication to public service and a broader commentary on the risks faced by sincere reformers in Nigeria’s political space.

“My brother has buried himself in his work… so completely, so selflessly, that we are constantly picking up the slack in other areas of his personal life,” Chukwumerije wrote, emphasizing the Commissioner’s deep commitment to his role in Governor Otti’s administration, which he credits for a visible transformation in Abia State over the past two years.

Dike commended both the governor and his brother for their integrity and developmental focus, asserting that such selfless service is rarely rewarded in a system still plagued by corruption, tribalism, and violence.

“This is the struggle we all, who are true change agents, face,” Dike stated. “And the further threat of being physically harmed for nothing more than doing the right thing.”

While expressing gratitude for his brother’s survival, he called for courage among Nigerians working for genuine change and urged them to remain undeterred. He concluded his message with a powerful invocation of faith and fearlessness: “Eyes forward, no fear.”

Security agencies have yet to release an official statement on the incident.
