Orji Kalu Speaks on Okpo Ihechiowa Road Projects, Rates Tinubu’s Performance
Turning attention to industrial development, Kalu addressed past criticisms over the location of his factories outside his hometown. He announced plans to establish key manufacturing projects in Igbere.
The Senator representing Abia North Senatorial District Senator Orji Uzor Kalu has revealed ongoing efforts to complete the Umuzomgbo–Okpo Ihechiowa road, highlighting plans to push for an extension in the 2026 federal budget.

Kalu made these remarks while addressing journalists at his Igbere country home on Tuesday on recent development projects and national issues.
“As I’m talking, they are working on Umuzomgbo to Okpo Ihechiowa road. I said the other day that I’ll beg President Bola Tinubu to give me an extension of 3-4km, which will take us straight to Okpo. It is currently being worked on. It will stop by the river, and it won’t get to Okpo but in th coming 2026 budget, I’ll beg President Tinubu to extend it to the border with Cross River State. This is what I’ve in plan.”
Turning attention to industrial development, Kalu addressed past criticisms over the location of his factories outside his hometown. He announced plans to establish key manufacturing projects in Igbere.
“People often question why I built factories in other places and not in Igbere, so I decided to build one here. There’s already a cashew factory, and we are going to lay the foundation to build a solar panel plant and a tricycle manufacturing facility from A to Z by March 31st. For me, we must support our State,” he said.

Reflecting on his time as governor, Kalu recalled that his administration never owed salaries or leave allowances, despite limited federal allocations.
“Our FAAC was N68 million, and we only got our first N1 billion in 2004. Still, there was life in the State. For 8 years, I never slept in Igbere because of peace and security. I even built the road in Igbere, and for more than 20 years, nobody touched it again until Governor Otti. I’m very happy with him.”
Kalu also emphasized unity over political rivalry, praising current Governor Alex Otti and Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives Benjamin Kalu as long-time allies despite political differences.
“Governor Otti was my bank manager. I cannot because politics create enmity. He is my friend for life. Just like Benjamin Kalu, he worked for me and I brought him into whatever he is today. That we belong to different parties doesn’t make us enemies.”
On the performance of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Kalu offered a positive assessment.
“The President has done very well in two years. I’m not playing politics. I’m talking about revamping the economy. Let us come together and support the President to rebuild our economy.”
