Lagos Govt Mentions Flood-Prone Areas, Advises Residents to Evacuate

The Lagos State Government has issued a fresh warning to residents in low-lying and flood-prone areas of the state, urging immediate evacuation as predictions from the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) point to heavier rainfall this year than in 2024.

Tokunbo Wahab, the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, disclosed this on Tuesday during an interview with Seun Okin on Channels Television’s Politics Today. He identified high-risk areas including Ajegunle, the Ajilete axis, the coastline of Ikorodu (notably Majidu), parts of the Lekki corridor, and the Ogunsho River channel.

“Those around the Ajilete axis of Lagos, that’s Ajegunle, they have to move. Those around the coastline of Ikorodu; Majidu, have to move. Some areas around the Lekki corridor, too, not all,” Wahab said.

He further advised residents in Isheri, particularly the OPIC area, to remain on high alert due to expected rising water levels.

In contrast, the commissioner assured that areas like Epe, Mushin, and Ikeja remain safe from major flood threats.

Wahab reiterated that the government is working with a long-term strategy to combat climate-related issues. “We have a Drainage Master Plan for the next 25 years. We review it every two years,” he stated, responding to a question about Lagos State’s preparedness and resilience plans.

He urged residents in lowland communities to consider temporary relocation to upland areas until the rainy season subsides.
