Dikko, Wakama Hail Renewed Momentum in Sports Under Tinubu
The Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Shehu Dikko, has praised the renewed momentum in Nigeria’s sports sector under President Bola Tinubu, describing the current trajectory as a collective and intentional drive toward sustainable development and excellence.

Speaking after the recent success of Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, D’Tigress on Channels Television on Tuesday, Dikko emphasised the importance of teamwork and leadership in achieving national goals in sports.
“When you are doing something well and the momentum is high, you believe that you are doing something right but it is a collective effort,” Dikko said. “Our job is to lead, give everyone the right, we are very intentional and deliberate in all that we do to make sure we improve on where we are coming from. We are trying to mitigate all the issues. We are heading to a new direction where everyone will have to do what they have to do. Everyone is happy with the new trajectory.”
Dikko also acknowledged President Tinubu’s influence in revitalising the sports landscape, stating: “President Bola Tinubu is bringing a new vibe, a new drive to the sports sector, which we are fortunate to be allowed to lead. So definitely, we’re doing something very right.”
Echoing the optimism, D’Tigress head coach Rena Wakama expressed pride and gratitude after leading Nigeria to another Women’s Afrobasket championship title. She credited the Federal Government for the overwhelming support and reflected on her journey back home.
“I lead with passion and purpose. When you do those two things, it is easy for people to follow you,” Wakama said. “I am relatable with my players. It feels amazing. It has been a lifelong dream to come home and be a positive figure. Anything you want to be in sports is possible.”
The Federal Government recently hosted the D’Tigress team to a celebratory reception in Abuja following their continental triumph, a moment many described as symbolic of a new dawn in Nigerian sports.
