Obi Perplexed Over “One Term” Agitation, Insists Four Years Enough to Turn Things Around
Labour Party presidential candidate and former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, has reiterated his commitment to serving only one term if elected president, insisting that four years is sufficient to turn Nigeria’s fortunes around if driven by sincere leadership and service.
In a statement titled “If Service Is the Motive, Turning the Tide in Four Years Is Possible,” Obi responded to mounting debates over his earlier promise to serve just a single term, dismissing suggestions that meaningful change cannot be achieved within four years.
“I still find it baffling that my decision to do a term of four years, if given the mandate to rule this country, is generating so much agitation,” Obi wrote. “By this feeling, we are doubting the fact that a sincere leader can achieve much in 48 months.”
Obi emphasized that his political ambition is not driven by desperation or personal gain, but by a deep commitment to nation-building. He listed traits such as aggressive rhetoric, unrealistic promises, personal attacks, and policy flip-flopping as signs of political desperation qualities he says have never been part of his political conduct.
“Throughout my political journey, I have never been involved in thuggery, the snatching of ballot boxes, or any form of electoral malpractice,” he stated. “I challenge anyone: conduct your investigations. You will find no stains of rigging or violence associated with my name.”
He further criticized government extravagance, referencing the recent acquisition of presidential jets, which he argued should have been redirected to vital sectors such as education, healthcare, and infrastructure.
According to Obi, a four-year term is enough to confront corruption, uphold the rule of law, and conduct credible elections provided the leadership is guided by principle, discipline, and a sense of urgency.
“Leadership, to me, is not about entitlement. It is about service,” Obi said. “If given the mandate, for just one term, I will dedicate every moment to building a Nigeria that works for all.”
Obi’s had proposed a one term of four years to turn things around in the country if given the opportunity to serve in 2027 stating that “vow to serve only one term of four years is a solemn commitment, rooted in my conviction that purposeful, transparent leadership does not require an eternity.”
He said “Forty-eight months is enough for any leader who is focused and prepared to make a meaningful difference. In that time, I intend not merely to make an impression, but to deliver on concrete promises to:
“sanitise our governance system;
tackle insecurity through effective and accountable use of national resources; prioritise education, healthcare, and poverty alleviation; catalyse small businesses as engines of growth ; and combat corruption with unflinching resolve.
“Above all, I will dedicate myself to transforming Nigeria from a consuming nation into a productive one, where agriculture, technology, and manufacturing replace rent-seeking and waste as our national anchors.”
