Omoyele Sowore, the convener of RevolutionNow, has strongly condemned the brutalisation of a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, Jennifer Edema Elohor, by members of the Agunechemba Vigilante Group in Oba, Anambra State.

“I strongly condemn the brutalisation of a youth corper by the Gov. Charles Soludo’s Charles Chukwuma Soludo’s Agunechemba Vigilante Group in Oba, Anambra State.”

In a statement, Sowore described the act as “barbaric and unacceptable,” calling for immediate and impartial judicial action against those responsible. He emphasised that such acts of violence must not be swept under the carpet, especially when the perpetrators have been identified and apprehended.

“Our National Youth Service Corps youth corps members are serving Nigeria; they must never be subjected to intimidation as was done to @USHIE RITA, humiliation, or sexual violence as seen in the horrific Anambra vigilante video. Vigilante groups cannot be allowed to operate above the law or brutalise innocent citizens with impunity,” Sowore stated, referencing the disturbing video circulating online that reportedly shows the abuse.

He further insisted that vigilante groups, while often acting in support of community security, must not be allowed to operate above the law or inflict violence on innocent citizens with impunity.

“This barbaric act is unacceptable and must not be swept under the carpet. Even when the individuals responsible for this violence have been identified and apprehended, they must also be brought to trial immediately through an impartial judicial process.”

Earlier today, a viral video showed members of the Agunechemba Vigilante Group stripping, beating and harassing corps members while they were allegedly pursuing Yahoo boys in the lodge. Despite explanations by the corps members and display of their identification cards, the group continued the harassment.

Meanwhile, the Anambra State Police Command confirmed the report, stating that the case has been stalled due to the inability of the corps member to state her account of the story.
