Embarrassment at TICAD9 as Nigerian Booth Stands Unmanned

A moment of national embarrassment unfolded at the 9th Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD9) in Kobe, Japan, as Nigeria’s exhibition booth stood unmanned while booths from other countries were manned by their representatives who were engaging visitors and fostering relationships.

Despite the likely expenditure on travel allowances and estacodes for an official delegation, no representatives were present at the booth to showcase Nigeria’s innovations, culture, or investment opportunities.

This glaring absence stood in contrast to the lively engagement seen at other African booths, all manned by officials and representatives actively promoting their nations.

A Nigerian attendee, Idris Ayo Bello @idrisayobello, frustrated by the silence and apparent lack of official representation, took it upon himself to serve as an impromptu ambassador.

“I hate to show negative things about Nigeria but, sadly, Nigeria is the only unmanned booth at TICAD9 in Japan. To all the folks who probably got an ESTA code for coming to Japan

“Only God knows how many Japanese folks have asked me about the unmanned booth seeing my dressing.

“So ashamed I have now designated myself as Honorary Consul and taken over the booth to engage visitors,” he said, adding that he felt compelled to uphold the country’s image on the international stage, even without formal backing.

TICAD9 is a major platform for fostering Africa–Japan cooperation, attracting government officials, business leaders, and investors from around the world.
