Unmanned Booth at TICAD9: FG Says Booth to be Inaugurated the Day After Event Launch

The Federal Government has said that it will inaugurate the Nigerian booth at the TICAD9 on Thursday, the 21st day of August, even though the event kicked off on Wednesday, the 20th of August 2025.

This was in response to the disappointment and frustration experienced by a Nigerian Idris Ayo Bello who visited the Nigerian booth but found out that it was empty despite the estacode to representatives who accompanied President Bola Tinubu to Japan.

In response, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said after the booth inauguration on Thursday, it would become operational.

“Contrary to a tweet made by a participant at TICAD, the Nigerian Booth at #TICAD9 has not yet been opened. The booth will be officially inaugurated on Thursday, 21st August 2025, after which it will become fully operational and serve the delegates of TICAD.”

But in a document seen by Newsleverage, it showed that the 9th Tokyo International Conference on African Development, TICAD9, will last for two days, 20th – 22nd August 2025. The conference is systematic in fostering a greater relationship between the participating nations.

Meanwhile, President Bola Tinubu, who led a delegation to the event, welcomed Japan’s commitment to the country while stating that a “true partnership requires a shift from aid to investment, from charity to co-creation, from pledges to shared purpose, and from marginalisation to fair representation.

“At TICAD 9, I made Nigeria’s position clear. We will always honour our Armed Forces not only for the battles they fight, but for the peace they help us build. We will keep honouring them by addressing the root causes of insecurity.

“Peace is not just the absence of war. It is justice. It is an opportunity. It is inclusion. That is where our reforms are focused. Our mission is to win both the battle and the future.

“We welcome Japan’s $5.5 billion commitment to Africa.

“Africa’s voice must be heard. Africa must have two permanent seats on the United Nations Security Council with full rights and privileges. This is not a favour. It is a historic imperative. It is justice.”
