NYSC Member Recounts Traumatic Assault by Agunechemba Vigilante Group’s Personnel
A serving member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Edema Elohor Jennifer, has recounted a harrowing encounter with suspected members of the Anambra State Vigilante Group, who allegedly broke into her lodge, assaulted her and fellow corps members, and forcibly abducted them.
Jennifer, currently serving in Oba, Idemili South Local Government Area of Anambra State, shared the disturbing details during an interview on Wednesday with social media personality Aprokoking.
According to her account, the incident occurred on the evening of July 13 at around 5 p.m. She and several other corps members were inside their residence when they were startled by aggressive banging on their door. Moments later, armed men believed to be vigilante operatives stormed the building.
“They barged into the lodge without explanation, physically assaulted us, and forced us out of the building,” Jennifer said, describing the ordeal as deeply traumatic.
She said: “My name is Edema Elohor Jennifer and this incident happened on the 23rd of July at about 5 p.m.
My colleagues and I were in our lodge charging our phones when we heard a knock on the door.
“At first, we thought it was a neighbour, but before I got to the door, it was kicked open.
“On the other end stood a masked man with a gun, without any uniform or form of identification.
“At first, I thought he was an armed robber until he ordered us outside.
“I tried to explain that we were corps members and even suggested showing our NYSC identity cards. My colleagues also presented theirs, but the men ignored us.
“They packed our laptops, our phones and everything. They became aggressive, asking what rights we had as corps members.
“Even when we pleaded with them to call our proprietor or NYSC officials before taking us away, they ignored us.
“They beat me, tore my clothes, and even hit one of my colleagues with an iron rod for pleading on my behalf. They forced me into their vehicle, pressing my neck, slapping me, and threatening to smash our phones if we contacted anyone.”
Following outrage on the brutality, the Anambra State Government has dismissed the eight personnel of the Agunechemba Vigilante Group who harassed, stripped and beat the female corps member while in pursuit of ‘yahoo boys.’
