Journalist Fejiro Oliver has been arraigned before the Federal High Court, Asaba Judicial Division, on multiple charges bordering on alleged defamation and incitement against Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and Senator Ede Dafinone, who represents Delta Central Senatorial District.

According to court documents, Oliver is accused of describing Governor Oborevwori as a “sleeping governor” in a publication, a statement the prosecution says was intended to ridicule and undermine the governor’s office.

In a separate set of charges, Oliver is also alleged to have made a series of derogatory remarks about Senator Dafinone, referring to him as a “grossly incompetent senator,” “sleeping senator,” “betraying ingrate,” “Dodo Senator,” and “POS Senator.”

The police claim that these statements amount to character assassination and are capable of inciting public disorder.

The police further charged Oliver for publicly calling for the recall of Senator Dafinone from the Senate, an act they say could disrupt democratic processes and stir unrest among constituents.

Oliver, who pleaded not guilty to all charges, maintains that his comments fall within the bounds of free speech and journalistic criticism. His legal team argues that the charges are politically motivated and intended to silence dissenting voices.
