The Governor of Abia State, Dr Alex Otti, has announced that the state will host the 63rd meeting of the Nigeria National Committee (NNC) of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) in November 2025. The event is scheduled to take place in Umuahia, the state capital.

The announcement made on his X account on Wednesday followed a courtesy visit to the Governor by a delegation from WAEC led by Mrs Mary Chima, the Branch Controller of WAEC in Abia State. During the visit, Mrs Chima formally conveyed the Council’s decision and highlighted the significance of the meeting.

Describing the NNC as WAEC’s highest policy-making body in Nigeria, Mrs Chima said the annual gathering draws together key education policymakers, including Commissioners of Education, Heads of WAEC offices, and senior national officers. The committee is responsible for shaping examination policies and influencing the direction of education across the country.

Governor Otti expressed gratitude to WAEC for selecting Abia as the host state, noting that the decision is both an honour and a testament to the state’s growing reputation for educational development and reform.

“We are truly honoured by this choice. More importantly, we see this as an opportunity to showcase the progress we are making and to strengthen our collaboration with key stakeholders in the education sector,” the Governor stated.

He revealed that the state government is currently undertaking large-scale renovation and reconstruction of public schools. In addition, efforts are underway to improve teacher quality and expand the education workforce. “We are recruiting an additional 5,000 qualified teachers,” Governor Otti announced, adding that the state has made substantial progress in curriculum enhancement and learning standards.

“With thousands of new teachers set to join our classrooms and major upgrades underway across our schools, we are proud to say: Abia is ready,” he declared.

Governor Otti reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to promoting academic excellence, integrity, discipline, and innovation, stressing that Abia State remains focused on becoming a model for educational transformation in Nigeria.

The 63rd WAEC Nigeria National Committee meeting is expected to bring national attention to Abia’s education sector and serve as a platform for high-level dialogue and policy formulation.
