NEC Approves N100bn for Police, Security Training Facility Overhaul

The National Economic Council (NEC) has approved N100 billion for the comprehensive rehabilitation and upgrading of training institutions belonging to the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies, pending final approval by President Bola Tinubu.

The move follows the submission of a detailed report by an ad hoc committee mandated to assess the state of security training facilities across the country. The decision was taken during the NEC’s 154th virtual meeting held on Wednesday.

In addition to the main funding, the council also approved N2.6 billion for consultancy services tied to the rehabilitation and upgrade project.

The initiative stems from President Tinubu’s directive at the 152nd NEC meeting in October, where he ordered a nationwide overhaul of security agencies’ training institutions to improve operational effectiveness and professionalism.

Presenting the committee’s findings, the Chairman and Governor of Enugu State, Dr Peter Mbah, described the condition of most facilities as deplorable and emphasised the urgent need for intervention.

He noted that revitalising these institutions is essential to enhancing the quality of training provided to Nigeria’s security personnel and strengthening the country’s overall security architecture.
